TriMet Low Income Fare Program

Austin is a Portland State University graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Community Development. After transferring from a local community college from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in 2018, he joined the BUILD EXITO scholar program. At PSU, he was a part of the Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research & Education (AASPIRE), where he analyzed employment and burnout data to develop a burnout measurement tool. As a Chamorro, he understands the need to deescalate situations  through gentle personalism and acknowledging the hidden issues, so we can heal from oppression. In his free time, Austin enjoys volunteering at food pantries to give back to the Portland community.

Building Leadership in the Community

DMA is pleased to see leadership emerging within the Karen Community (one of the ethnic group of Myanmar). Ner Moo, a Karen community member, is leading and facilitating a gardening workshop series. The Gardening workshop, in Karen, is being held at DMA on March 9th (and every weekend until April 6). At our Community Visioning in 2018, we learned members of this community are passionate growers and have close relationships with soil and plants. Farming is a way of life for many in their home country Burma and in the refugee camp in Thailand. They were looking for such opportunities in Portland where they can build skills among members with no or limited English skills. Let’s hear Ner’s experience in building this opportunity for his community-Learn about gardening in Portland!

"My name is Ner Moo, and I work with the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) as a Seed to Supper Garden Ambassador. I represent the Karen community from Myanmar and Thailand. In September 2018, DMA connected me with the OFB. This has opened a new door for community members to educate themselves on how to grow food in their place. A way of connecting people back into something that they are familiar to an unfamiliar new lifestyle. Over the last few months, I took the garden ambassador training at OFB, and now I can share my knowledge back to my community. I am excited to say that the first Garden Education in Karen Language will be on March 9th at the DMA office from 9-11am!"

What is PedPDX?

PedPDX is Portland’s citywide pedestrian plan. It will prioritize sidewalk and crossing improvements and other investments to make walking safer and more comfortable across the entire city. The plan will identify the key strategies and tools we will use to make Portland a great walking city for everyone.

Before Portland City Council votes on the plan in May, we want to know what our communities think about it. Does the plan represent what matters most to you? Does it address your biggest concerns? Join us at the PedPDX Rosewood Community View + Review Party and let us hear from you! This event is hosted by Rosewood Initiative, Oregon Walks and Portland Bureau of Transportation and will feature local food, videos showing the highlights of the plan, community feedback about the plan via discussion and surveys, childcare, and language interpretation services.

Division Midway Alliance Response to COVID-19

“We are in this together”! Division Midway Alliance understands the challenges our communities and business owners are facing due to COVID-19. In order to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community, DMA has created a resource list for both residents and small business owners in our community.

DMA Business Survey

Division Midway District Business Impact

As a community impacted by COVID-19, DMA would like to know more about how your business is navigating through these difficult times, so we developed a survey to learn about the experiences of businesses within the Division neighborhood. In order to gather more information, DMA developed a survey to help assess how the COVID-19 is impacting local retailers and product companies in order to help provide an accurate picture to state & local officials and also our community partners & funders.

Some excerpts from the survey includes:

  • “We have lost a little above 50% of sales, but are doing the best we can to keep our doors opened and keep our employees.
  • “Publicity would be nice to let the neighbors know that we are still open. A loan to keep up with the bills would be really helpful”.
  • “I need money to cover the lease and insurance for my business and money for living costs” .
The survey may be accessed @ https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc83u0OLThWnAAZYMtueDAoCEEPsc8wrTMXBrLkyn_sPBcHLA/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&usp=mail_form_link
Other Resources for the Community & Business Owners
Multnomah County Health Department
The County Health Department has been hard at work translating COVID-19 resources into different languages for the diverse communities in Oregon. This is beneficial for non-native English speakers in our community. Big thanks to all at the health department that took part in translating resources into other languages. Additional translations may be sought @ https://multco.us/novel-coronavirus-covid-19

Congressman Earl Blumenauer
Additional resources are available through the office of Congressman Earl Blumenauer’s office.
