Blog + Facebook + Twitter = Great web presence and great business

Sounds simple, right? To hear Guy Edwards tell it, it can be. Just an hour, OK, maybe two or three, a week makes a big difference to your online marketing.

Guy enthralled the about 20 East Portland business owners at the DMA’s mixer in April with ways to draw a lot of traffic to your website. Guy, a consultant at the MHCC-based Small Business Development Center, also told the group how Google thinks.

DMA hits the airwaves to pitch events to Slavic communities
By Ann Ereline

Festival of Nations’ sponsor Slavic Community Center of NW and Slavic Family Radio, which reaches tens of thousands of Slavic-languages speakers in our area, put DMA on the air recently to promote not only the festival but also the May 11 job fair. By all accounts the part-English, part-Russian chat went well.

Festival of Nations Sponsorship Drive Picks Up Steam

Division Midway Alliance (DMA) began its sponsorship drive for the 2016 Festival of Nations at the beginning of April.   Several media sponsors — KBOO, I Heart Radio and Slavic Community Center of NW — are on board to help DMA reach the public with news about the Festival.

Without media sponsors, DMA would have to spend a lot of money to advertise the festival.  “Such expenditures would take away from our ability to pay local artists and performers for their work,” said Lori Boisen, DMA District Manager. “These sponsorships are very appreciated, and help us have the best possible festival by using marketing funds to pay great artists to perform.” Continue Reading

Calling all East Portland Artists
By Lori Boisen

Division Midway Alliance’s President Lorelei Young is compiling a list of artists who live or work in East Portland. Opportunities to hire artists for community projects arise but seldom get response from East Portland artists.

The list will be shared with neighborhood associations, festival coordinators and agencies that have commissions or funding for art projects.

East Portland offers many venues such as parks for performing artists. Our area also hosts local celebrations that seek local artists. Grants are available for local artists.

The East Portland Artists List information will not be sold, although it will be shared with other agencies that agree to share their lists, too. Artists on the list will receive a copy.

If you are interested in being a part of the East Portland Artists’ List, contact Lorelei Young at loreleiportland@gmail.

Mt. Hood Wellness Center Serving East Portland

Bob Dylan sang the “Times they be a changing” fifty years ago, and it is as apropos as ever. This author never thought that in his lifetime he would be writing about a legal cannabis business, but that is the case. The Oregon Voters have spoken and cannabis is legal. It has come out of the shadows and  into the  light.  Thus, our business spotlight this month  is on Mt. Hood Wellness Center that  is part of Rose City Labs.

Mt. Hood Wellness Center is owned my Portlander, Daniel Huson. He has two stores; one on Northeast Broadway and one at 11121 SE Division St.  Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.   When you walk  in, you will be greeted by a very nice interior displaying what used to be referred to as paraphernalia. The tools for cannabis also were illegal once upon a time, but as we said, the times have changed, and they too are legal. Some items are beautiful enough to be seen as works of art. Continue Reading

Go through the French doors, and you will be where the cannabis is sold. There are two sets of display counters. Medical cannabis is on one side, recreational on the other. The room  looks  like any other retail store, truly contradicting what the stereotype some people have for  such a business.

Barb Klinger: Long-time Community Activist Keeps On Giving

By Kem A. Marks

What makes a community, and an organization, great are the individuals who  are a part of that community.. So often these individuals make contributions that are never seen by the larger community.  One of these individuals is Barb Klinger.

Barb has lived in Southeast Portland almost all of her life.  She is part of the Powellhurst Gilbert Neighborhood Association and helps with its Neighborhood Night Out each year.  Barb is also part of the East Portland Rovers, a group of volunteers who support multiple East Portland Neighborhood Events.   An active member of her church, she steps up to help others in the congregation.
