DMA MISSION, VISION, AND EQUITY STATEMENTS

Dear DMA community,

Division Midway Alliance is pleased to share our new mission, vision, and values. Our new "brand" reflects our perception of a prosperous and equitable community and a future where Division street becomes the model for all other neighborhoods! Our new mission statement is "a place-based nonprofit creating social resiliency and economic prosperity for residents and businesses. We work to achieve equity – in resources, opportunity, and quality of life for diverse communities".

In the coming days, DMA staff and board members will be hard at work in implementing strategies, providing grants, and conducting community outreach in ensuring that we achieve equity not only as a community organization, but also as a key feature of community success!

You can find our statements here @ http://divisionmidway.org/about/

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY DIALOGUE ON DISPLACEMENT, RELOCATION, & PLACEMAKING

When: Friday, October 16 & Monday, October 19th
From: 2:00pm to 4:30pm

Our goal is to create a space in which community members can come together and share their lived experiences and/or learn more about displacement, relocation, and placemaking. We will have guest speakers from the Bureau of Sustainability and the Portland Housing Bureau. Participants will also have the opportunity to brainstorm different forms in which placemaking can be made possible in SE Portland with the different infrastructure projects occurring in the area.

We are currently looking for 15 community members who want to participate in the dialogue. They must be able to attend both virtual meetings. Participants will receive a $50 gift card.

REIMAGINING PUBLIC SAFETY: TRIMET SURVEY

The project is about ensuring safety for transit users and creating policies by reducing existing Transit Police contracts by six positions and redirecting an additional $1.8 million of our security budget to community-based public safety. DMA collaborated with TRIMET and conducted 50 interviews (30 non-English and 20 English) and 2 Focus Groups (1 in English and 1 in Karen language)

Trimet general surveys can be found here.

SLOW STREETS INITIATIVE

INITIATION OF PORTLAND'S PHASE 2 ROLLOUT OF SLOW STREETS

Background. In response to COVID and the need for physical distancing, PBOT initiated a Slow Streets program as part of our Safe Streets Initiative. This initiative represents one important focus of the agency in responding to the COVID-19 public health crisis. The Safe Streets initiative turns sections of our neighborhood greenway streets into “local access only.” The intent is to help limit traffic to essential trips (including emergency access) and deliveries. It will make these streets more accessible for everyone and providing more space to get outside for fresh air as we are practicing social distancing.

Phase 1. The implementation installs orange construction barrels, A-boards, and signs at the key intersection to encourage people driving to “Go Slow” and treat the streets as local access, only. The initial installation (“Phase 1”), targeted the existing 103 miles of neighborhood greenways. A typical installation is shown in Figure 1.

Phase 2. The Phase 1 installation left uncovered areas of the city without existing neighborhood greenways, identified by the circled areas in Figure 2. Phase 2 will treat another 32 miles of roadways that are future neighborhood greenways that have either been funded or identified in the recently adopted Southwest in Motion (SWIM) Plan. Seventy-nine (79) intersections are targeted for installation in Phase 2 and are shown as green dots in Figure 2. We intend to order enough materials for an additional, twenty (20) as-yet unidentified intersections in order to respond to community requests.

PBOT’s contractor, Axiom Event Productions, manages the Phase 1 installations and are ready to proceed with Phase 2. PBOT will send a mailer to all residences along or adjacent to the targeted corridors to provide notice and describe the treatment. Once Phase 2 installations are approved, it will take approximately two weeks to begin work.

DMA BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT

 CHECK OUT THE NEW BUSINESS!

Khadro Abdi and Sonder are passionate and highly self-driven individuals with an interest to become food entrepreneurs. DMA referred both to our program partner Livelihood NW. With the help of LIvelihood NW, they learned various skills that are needed to start a new business. Both of them have opened their brick and mortar business in the middle of Pandemic! Please support their business!

Khadro Abdi | Alleamin African Kitchen

Khadro, the owner of Alleamin African Kitchen came to the US from Somalia as a refugee from Somalia in 2005. Khadro learned and sacrificed her time and talent to open her first business, a daycare for three years with the support of her faith and community. But her real joy was making and sharing food. She then opened her first East African Cuisine restaurant called Alle Amin, serving Somalian foods, hot sauces, rice, goat meat, and sambusas. When the lease ended suddenly, it was very sad for her community and family. But that did not stop Khadro. She continues to work on her sauces. She continued at farmer's market selling her sauces and able to get one of her sauces on the shelves at Market of Choice and other stores but was always looking for the next opportunity to have her own restaurant again. She found Livelihood NW through Division Midway Alliance. On August 8, 2020, she opened Alleamin African Kitchen! The new location is at 6935 NE Glisan St. She is so excited to share her food directly with her customers and community. These plans were in place before Covid-19, but with a lot of support, encouragement, faith, and hard work, during this global pandemic, she has been able to make this dream happen! Come visit and try her delicious food soon!

Sonder | Sea & River Sushi + Burmese Grill

Meet Sonder, owner of the newly opened Sea & River Sushi + Burmese Grill! Sonder has cooked professionally and trained as a chef all over the world including Thailand, Malaysia, and Portland. He brings his expertise as a chef in multiple cuisines to his new restaurant now, the Sea & River Sushi + Burmese Grill, located in the Rocket Empire Machine (REM) building on NE 69th and Glisan in Portland, OR.

Sea & River Sushi pairs high quality and beautiful sushi rolls with a delicious curated selection of traditional Burmese and Thai dishes that reflect Sonder’s worldly cooking expertise. When Sonder first started working with Livelihood NW, his dream of opening a sushi restaurant...
seemed far away. He met with his Business Advisor through Livelihood NW’s Open Business Advising Hours, in East Portland, frequently at the Division Midway Alliance office. This free program helped Sonder develop his business plan and search for a location for his business. Sonder began building out his kitchen space, working with contractors, his landlord, other business owners, regulation agencies, and suppliers. He opened his doors at the end of August 2020 with a sushi menu, and the Burmese food will follow! Try something new and support our newest local business!"

TRIMET ON THE DIVISION TRANSIT PROJECT

Information on construction activities for the Division Transit Project, including current auto, pedestrian, and cyclist impacts. Please slow down and expect delays near the construction zones. Construction work occurs weekdays unless otherwise noted. More information on the Division Transit Project can be found here with information on who to contact if you have any questions about it.

TRIMET FARE UPDATE: YOU CAN PAY FARE WITH CASH !

Starting Thursday, October 1, you can once again pay your fare on buses with cash.
Trimet recently finished installing operator safety panels on all in-service 40-foot buses. Special thanks to TriMet riders who keep it moving. This year has brought many changes and necessary inconveniences. Even though Trimet will now accept cash on board again, they strongly encourage riders to pay with contactless payment options like Hop Card. We’re fighting a virus that can be spread via touch, and anything that reduces the number of people touching the same item – like a farebox or cash itself – can be helpful. You can purchase a plastic Hop card locally from our Division Midway District Businesses:
  • Mingala International Market - 2548 SE 122nd Ave, Portland - PH#: (503)-954-1346
  • Yadanar Halal Market - Yadanar Halal Market - 12350 SE Division St, Portland - Ph#: (503) 477-7554
Or you could also buy a virtual one on your phone.

If you self-certified your eligibility for LWA, you will receive individual $300 payments for each week you are eligible for, via your current method of payment. If you receive electronic deposit (direct deposit or ReliaCard), you should see funds in your account within three business days.

If you have not yet certified but think you are eligible for LWA, certify using the Online Claim System before it’s too late! There is no cut-off date for self-certification, but since funds are limited we encourage claimants who have not certified yet to do so immediately.
